After a busy week of preparing for Easter the first graders had a little fun today going on an Easter egg hunt. We walked over to Mary Foley Park to find hundreds of Easter eggs scattered throughout the park. Everyone collected a dozen eggs and to their surprise they were filled with ... math problems. The students happily solved their problems to earn a little prize. After that we watched a Reading Rainbow episode called Renchenka's Egg. The book is by Patricia Polacco and tells the story of a Ukrainian woman who rescues a goose. The goose goes on to lay brightly colored eggs and leaves the old women a little chick for company. After completing the book the video goes on to demonstrate how the pysanky eggs are made, how eggs are very strong and you can stand on them, and ways in which eggs are similar and different.
In guided reading this week students read different levels of a story called Anna and the Dancing Goose. We began writing a retell of this story as well as compared it to the Renchenka's Egg story.
For Holy Week students made a Stations of the Cross walkway and we went to the 8th grade presentation of Stations of the Cross on Wednesday. We also made cards for the little preschooler who has been ill, Maria Isabel.
Have a joyous and fun Easter!
