Today is the celebration of St Joseph day. We had an interdisciplinary lesson connecting religion, science, and social studies. First we did the read-aloud book Song of the Swallows by Leo Politi, which is about the swallows migrating each year from Argentina to the mission at San Juan Capistrano. Next we discussed the importance of Saint Joseph, who he is, and how he is a patron saint of workers in Italy. I shared pictures from my visit to the mission in California. Students were able to see the nests as well as the bells from the story. We looked at a map to see where the birds flew and then the students were given a chance to color their own swallows. Tomorrow we will sing the song of the swallows as well as fly our finished swallows.
