Today was a fantastic day! Students arrived at school with their clock scavenger hunt homework and a baggie of soil for science lab. Everyone had so much to share about doing these homework assignments. We began our day, as we always do, with prayer and the pledge. After that students wrote about their day on Easter. Next we had our morning meeting with students correcting my message, doing calendar, and number of the day math problems. Students love creating problems with their turn & talk partners. Our poem this week is about clocks to go with our math topic. Following morning meeting we did Fundations using the magnets to build long vowel words with the suffix s and students played 4 in a Row Long Vowel O.

For math today students learned more about clocks including the hour and minute hands, and the vocabulary of noon and midnight. Students practiced the skills with play clocks and a matching clock worksheet. When students finished their seat work they chose a clock game to play with a partner.

Finally it was time for science! After sharing their prior knowledge of soil (dirt), we watched a video about the components of soil and made a list of vocabulary words (humus, minerals, topsoil, and organic matter). Next students made observations about what was in their soil sample and compared it to the sample of soil from Mrs. Cunningham's garden. At the end of the day students listened to a read aloud of the book "Dirt" and read four pages about soil in the science text with their partner. Next week we will be looking further into the components of soil (sand, clay, & humus) and the effect water has on these parts of soil. Also, students will begin their "Pet Rock" project.
