Today we began our new science unit on rocks & soil. To access prior knowledge and ask questions students gave ideas for a KWL chart. After making a list of question we began with a Rock vocabulary song and a short video explaining the three types of rocks. Then we reviewed how to make observations using our senses, how to use a hand lens, and discussed the recording sheet. Students were each given a lab tray with a rock, a lens, and a ruler. They did a great job observing and describing their rocks. Here's the link to the youtube video:
