After a long weekend students settled in this morning with a writing prompt Students all wrote 3-5 sentences and shared details about their weekends. We had our morning meeting and sang our new poem which is called "Reduce, Reuse, Recycle." The remainder of the morning was spent on language arts: Fundations, guided reading, word work, silent read, and writing. Students had the opportunity to play Frog & Toad Long/Short Vowel for E and Sheep to Jeep with a partner. At this point in the year students are learning many ways to get a long vowel sound. The Fundations lessons on vowels are reinforced during the reading block. For writing students finished their writing about a community worker and decorated their worker.
After lunch we had math. Today students played an interactive problem solving game on the Smartboard and then rotated through 3 centers. They worked to find the missing number in equations and went on TODO math on the ipads. Students have learned two card games: Close to 20 and Ten Go Fish. These games reinforce addition fluency and addition for a missing addend. I will send the game directions home at the end of the week and encourage you to play each game with your child. All you need is a deck of playing cards with the tens & face cards pulled out.
Finally it was time for our St. Joseph day lesson and project. The students from 1B came to our room for the read aloud and discussion of the legend of the swallows at San Juan Capistrano Mission. We sang a song, looked at a map, learned about St Joseph and how his day is celebrated. I shared pictures and information from my visit to the mission. Then the students from 1A got to go up to 1B to make swallows to take home.
