What great weather for January! It was so nice to be able to get outside for recess these past two days. Please continue to dress for the weather and we will go out whenever possible. Also don't forget to discuss the temperature and weather changes with your child; it is great to sneak in science whenever possible.
Today the students worked really hard to complete the unit 3 assessment on geometry, fractions, and word problems. The children put in their best effort and used all of their strategies. I hope you enjoyed the "quiz" that your child gave you last night on shapes! It has been a fun unit with a lot of maniplulatives and opportunities to get creative. The next unit is Mental math (adding and subtracting multiples of ten), place value (tens, one), coins, and word problems. Please support this unit by giving your child coins to add, ask them what the change is, and add up easy purchases under a dollar (is there such a thing?). Also it is very important that your child master the basic addition and subtraction facts from 0-10. This includes problems like: 3+5, 6+4, 9-3, 10-5, etc. The homework tonight is an example of what is expected to be known with fluency.
In reading we have finished the dinosaur books and will be moving on to both fiction and non- fiction books about animals. We are using books on Reading A to Z (ie. RazKids) in class so please do not have your child read the assignment section. The students should only be reading the leveled reading on their own. If you would like to see how your child is progressing, just click on the parent link and you can contact me via the sight. Also it is VERY important to keep working on progressing their reading. While it is awesome so many students gained reading levels in December, they need to keep going and gaining a level a month approximately. Please contact me for specific goals for your individual child. Congratulations to the five students who gained a level this week!
January has started off as a busy month with great learning occurring. I am looking forward to Catholic Schools week (Jan. 29-Feb. 3) as well as the Rain Forest Reptile presentation next week. Please feel free to contact me with questions or for suggestions on books or reading.
