Today was a busy day in first grade. We began our day as usual with writing journal and morning meeting. After that students took their unit test in Fundations. Students need to listen then write sounds, words and sentences using new and prior knowledge of phonics rules and sentences. This week we worked on -all, -an and -am words During snack students listened to the story "The Great Turkey Race" and danced the "Turkey Hokey Pokey." After lunch students took their unit 2 math assessment. It is amazing to observe their problem solving strategies!
We took time today to make thank you cards for Grandparents and to make puppets of the people we learned about from reading tall tales. The students have learned that these special stories are passed from generation to generation. We also are learning about what exaggerations are and learning how to find them in the literature we are reading. The students enjoyed reading about Johnny Appleseed, Annie Oakley, Davy Crockett, and Paul Bunyan. Next we will read and compare several different versions of one folktale. Have a Happy Thanksgiving! I hope you enjoyed your placemat.
