Today in 1A we made wind socks to close our weather and seasons unit. Students wrote and drew to share what they knew about seasons, clouds, wind, and temperature. It has been a fun unit but we are looking forward to progressing to our social studies unit on Folktales. We are also continuing to learn about Patriotism as we have discussed Veteran's Day, voting, and the White House. We will be discussing and seeing images of our national symbols and singing patriotic songs. Students will listen to a read aloud on the U.S. flag.
Reading is a major part of every day in first grade. In reading we have been doing retell using sequence words, writing word families, and practicing sight words. In small group we discuss what we have read and compare texts. We read fiction and non-fiction texts.
The Reading A to Z site (RAZKIDS) is used in class to support reading skills and I strongly encourage you to use this at home at least 3 days per week. I can see on the teacher portal what skills the child is working on and when they are ready to progress to a new reading level. Children need to take the comprehension checks for each book they read, In Fundations we are continuing to add sight words (have, from ) and have started a new unit with a focus on the -an and -am word families. When doing ELA homework please remind your child to use proper letter formation.
I am looking forward to meeting with you in December. The time slips for your conference went home yesterday.
