Students have been very hard-working this week. In Fundations we have been reading and spelling the sight words: have, you, your, said, and they. Ask your child to sing the "They" song if they haven't already shared it with you. The skill for unit 4 is double consonants- ll, ss, ff, zz. Some of the words we have worked on include: miss, cuff, tell and the all word family (rhymes). At listening center students enjoyed "Duck for President." During guided reading students have been tapping out words, using picture clues, and word chunks to solve words. Students have been working to be able to share a complete retell. Students practice sight words daily through games and with flash cards. In Math we continue to focus on addition and subtraction to twenty. Students have been using many strategies to solve and learn their math facts including songs (A Dog Named Ten & Double Numbers), doubles, fact families, number lines, cubes, and drawing dots. Students have been practicing with more independence, the DICE problem solving approach. The "D" is for dissect the question and circle key information. The "I" is for illustrate using dots. The "C" is for calculate the problem with a number sentence or equation. The "E" is for explain your thinking and turn the question around. In Science today we learned about wind and will observe the wind over the next few days and how it impacts our weather. Students continue to enjoy observing the clouds. In writing we have been working hard on a family focus piece with 3 "chapters." Final copies will be displayed soon. In religion we have been learning about Jesus and his followers. We will be working to understand the Our Father's meaning later this week.
