First graders were taking their unit one math test this morning. They were doing a great job staying focused and writing as well as drawing their problems. I was thinking "Wow, we are getting so much done before lunch!" It was 10:55 and in walks Mrs. Cole. She wanted to know why we were late for lunch. "We weren't late for lunch and recess doesn't begin for another 5 minutes," I thought to myself. Then she saw our clock and said "Now I understand." The time was really 11:15. It seems the clock had slowed and was 20 minutes behind! The kids got to eat their lunch and we took a bit of extra recess in the afternoon. It was amazing how hard they were working and not one had complained about being hungry!
This week in Fundations students are learning digraphs- ck, ch, sh, th, wh. In reading I am doing sight word assessments. I will send lists home for you to practice. The highlighted words are the ones you need to focus on. You can make flash cards with your child and reinforce these words when you read at home. I will also send home a sight word game that is like Chutes and Ladders. I hope you are having your child do the reading for a bit each night as well as reading to them. If you need advice on just right reading level books, please do not hesitate to contact me. Please have your child use Reading A to Z whenever possible. When I correct the word work each week I send it home in the yellow folder. Your child should read these words to you for practice. Happy reading!!!
